In my experience the pinion seals rarely just go bad. I guess I might as well add this, but I am sure most will disagree. This dosent to any damage (in my opinion) and provides not only a bit of retaining force but somewhat of a reference as to whether the nut moved under load. When I am happy with the drag I usually take a small chisel and "stake" the nut to the pinion just a bit. At this point I set the actual pinion preload. After this, almost aways the drag will drop a few in lbs. In my opinion this will seat the bearings and races. On a side note to this, after I have feel quite a bit of rotational drag on the pi onion, say 10 in lbs as an example, I use a large brass drift punch a tap the center of the pinion on both ends a couple of times with a hammer. Personally I want quit a bit of torque on the pinion nut so it wont back off. If it seems as that the sleeve collapsed too easily I will try and find out why. The torque on the nut is what ever it takes to collapse the sleeve.

For what its worth I always set the preload on a crush sleeve type of pinion with the the seal installed.
